Poet name: Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)
Poem name: Bed in summer
The poem
ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer, quite the other way
I have to go to bed by day.
I have to go to bed and see.
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people's feet
Still going past me in the street.
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by Day ?
This poem has some interesting things about England to
tell those who have never been there. In the winter months,
around Christmas, it is dark untill about 8 o'clock in the
morning. In the summer months, June to September, It is
light untill about 9 o'clock at night.
The poet does not like the idea of having to go to bed
early in summer when the sky is clear and blue. On the other
hand he has to get up early during winter when it's still dark.
